Sophie Wheeler, was born in Ballinasloe Co. Galway in 1998 and is a student in her third year at GMIT Centre for Creative Arts and Media, previously attending Galway Technical Institution and receiving full QQI awards in Level 5 Portfolio Presentation and Level 6 Drawing and Visual Inquiry. Sophie enjoys working and experimenting with photography, painting using gouache paint to ensure vibrant, solid colors, and has recently been using thread to sew onto photos instead of paint to make simplistic lines and mark making. During the pandemic, her Dad had a serious health scare which later prompted her to look at family photo albums and from there she began painting as a form of re-awakening old family photographs, taking basic elements and colors to the most important aspects of the photo and focusing on the fundamentals of the image rather than the finer details.
